"The spending of large sums in the development of interest in the arts and sciences is an occurrence of more than aesthetic significance. We are living in a museum age and we must not be slow to recognize it."
-Florence K. Sloane, upon accepting Norfolk's distinguished Cosmopolitan Medal in 1932
Sloane Collection
The Hermitage is home to the Sloane Collection, an assemblage of fine and decorative art which rivals the house itself in both scope and inventiveness. With over 40,000 objects, the collection spans 5,000 years of art history and represents over 30 countries. As a pioneering patron of early 20th century painters and sculptors, Mrs. Florence Sloane is among the pantheon of great American collectors.
Exhibitions
Presented in two second-floor Changing Galleries, the Hermitage offers an ongoing schedule of temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Featuring a dynamic range of contemporary art, the theme of each exhibition connects in some way to the history of the Hermitage, the Slone Collection, the gardens and grounds, or the Hampton Roads community - all while supporting Hermitage’s mission. Exhibitions are made interactive by incorporating artist workshops and lectures, educational activities, and other related programming.
