Young Artists Summer Art Camp

This year the Hermitage is hosting four weeks of summer camp for Young Artists, ages 11-13 for the first time. The camp takes place June 20-July 1 and August 8-August 19. Campers can participate in all four weeks of camp or choose those weeks which best fit their schedules and interests. The camp day runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a morning session from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., lunch and outdoor time (weather permitting) from noon to 1:00 p.m., and the afternoon session from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Each day, Young Artists will focus on one artistic medium during the 3-hour morning session and another medium during the 3 hour afternoon session with the goal of completing a work of art in each medium. Each lesson will include a brief discussion on the history of the medium and examples of famous works in that medium. By the end of the week, campers will have created a mini-portfolio to share with family, friends and teachers.

Each week will incorporate a special house tour and other activities taking place inside the museum, guest instructors and artist demonstrations, a nature walk, and time in the gardens and wetlands. No previous art instruction is necessary but an ability to focus on one project for up to 2 ½ hours and an appreciation for art is encouraged! Campers who choose to attend more than one week may experience some overlapping instruction but will be encouraged to try new methods, build upon their previous lessons and create new projects. The foundations of drawing are featured in each week.
